The Crown Jewel pack (a $5,000 rip) crossed into positive EV territory at 4:40 PM PT on July 17 and held there for about 20 minutes, peaking at +5.3% by 4:59 PM before closing at -2.3% at 5:01 PM. The math behind the swing is readable in the pool data.
What drove the move
The biggest structural change between the before-window snapshot and the peak was a wave of new cards entering the Lineup tier alongside a simultaneous pool size shift. Before the window opened, the pool sat at 34 cards. At the peak it was 35, and by close it had reached 43. That expansion alone would normally drag per-card odds down (and it did, from 3.221% to 3.1203% at peak, then to 2.4962% at close). But several of the cards that appeared between the open and the peak were priced well above the pack price, which kept aggregate EV positive even as odds slid.
Specifically, four Lineup cards visible at the peak that were not in the before-window pool are worth noting. A Shohei Ohtani 2026 Bowman ($5,601), a Tom Brady 2010 Topps Finest ($5,250), a Christian McCaffrey 2025 Panini Absolute ($5,250), a Luka Doncic 2018-19 Panini Donruss ($5,250), a Josh Allen 2018 Panini Select ($3,932), a Stephen Curry 2025-26 Finest ($4,012), a Patrick Mahomes II 2017 Panini Prizm ($4,467), and a Luka Doncic 2020-21 Panini One and One ($3,147) all appeared in the pool by the peak reading that weren't there before the window. Each of those at 3.12% odds contributed meaningfully to total EV.
Meanwhile, three cards that were in the before-window pool did not appear at the peak: the Mike Trout 2011 Topps Update ($5,105), the Kobe Bryant 1996-97 Skybox E-X2000 ($3,767), and the Kevin Durant 2017-18 Panini Cornerstones ($3,021) were all gone. The Trout and Kobe E-X2000 were each contributing around $163 to EV at 3.221% odds. Their absence, offset by the incoming cards, still produced a net gain.
The Grail tier held steady throughout: the Mahomes 2025 Panini Absolute at $57,300 (0.05% odds, $28.65 EV contribution), the Anthony Edwards 2024-25 Panini Flawless at $43,920 ($21.96 contribution), and the LeBron/Kobe 2004-05 Upper Deck Trilogy, which repriced upward from $25,600 at open to $26,500 at close, adding a modest lift at the margin.
The curve
The pack opened the window at -0.2% EV, essentially flat. By 4:59 PM, with the new Lineup cards in the pool and odds still at 3.12%, EV had climbed to +5.3%. The window closed one minute later as the pool expanded to 43 cards and per-card odds fell to 2.4962%, compressing every card's EV contribution proportionally. At close, the three top cards (Aaron Judge 2013 Bowman Draft at $15,500, LeBron James 2024-25 Panini Prizm Black at $12,900, and Paul Skenes 2023 Bowman Draft Sapphire at $11,290) were each contributing roughly $100 to $130 less than they had at peak, purely from the odds compression.
The window was short and the cause is visible: new high-value cards entered the pool during a period when odds were still relatively concentrated, and that combination pushed EV above water briefly before the pool grew enough to pull it back down.
